Aviation Terms and Phrases

There are so many terms and jargon used at the airport in order to make it difficult for an outsider to understand. In this article, I’m going to define some of the terms that might interest you as an outsider.

Asime Ghana

These are,

  • Terminal. Terminals are any useful building situated at the airport.
  • Runway. The runway is the long rectangular stretch at the Airside of an airport on which airplanes land or take off.
  • Airside. The Airside is the restricted area of an airport.
  • Landside. Landside tends to mean, a place or portion of an airport where access is not controlled.
  • Control Tower. The Control tower is the Tallest terminal or building at the airport. The aircraft is being controlled in flight or on grounds from the tower. All sorts of communications between the airport and the pilot are done via the control tower.
  • Check-in area. The Check-in area is the part of the departure hall where all flight check-ins are carried out. Check-in is the process a passenger goes through with regard to attaining his/her boarding pass and baggage tags if any.
  • Boarding gate. The gate is where the passengers sit and wait for their flight after the check-in process.
  • Stand/Bay. Is the portion of the Airside where the aircraft finally stops and chocks on.
  • Taxiway. A taxiway is a path on which the aircraft slowly moves before hitting the runway or the parking bay/stand.

I hope with these few points, you have learned something new to better your understanding of some terms used in aviation.
